- Set the framing square to 7″ on the tongue (rise) and 11″ on the blade (run), and clamp stair gauges at those marks.
- Starting near one end of the board, walk the square up the stock, tracing each riser and tread line to lay out all 6 notches.
- Cut the top of the stringer with a plumb cut of 7″ so it lands flush against the header/upper floor framing.

Interior stringers usually land on a finished subfloor and attach at the top to a header inside a framed stairwell. Deck stringers instead hang off the outside of the deck's rim joist and land on grade or a pad, exposed to weather on both ends.
That's why deck stringers are almost always cut from pressure-treated 2x12 lumber rather than interior-grade lumber, and why the bottom cut needs to sit on something that won't heave, rot, or settle.
Attaching the stringer to the rim joist
The strongest, most inspector-friendly method is a stair stringer hanger (a metal bracket) fastened to the rim joist with structural screws or joist hanger nails, cradling the top of the stringer. A cleat or ledger board screwed to the rim joist and notched under the stringer is a common alternative.
Avoid relying on toe-nails or angled screws alone at the top connection; deck stairs see repeated dynamic load, and a stringer that shifts at the top is a common failure point.

- Cut the top plumb cut and bottom level cut
- Apply the drop cut at the bottom (riser height minus tread thickness)
- Attach a hanger or cleat to the rim joist for the top connection

Why the drop cut matters
When a tread board sits on top of the stringer's cut, it adds its own thickness to that step's total height. Left uncorrected, the bottom step ends up taller than every other riser by the thickness of the tread material, which is a classic trip hazard the IRC-style rules about riser variation are meant to prevent.
The fix is the drop cut: trim the bottom of the stringer down by the tread's thickness before it meets the ground or sill plate. For a 7 in riser and 1 in thick 5/4 decking, the drop cut removes 1 in from the bottom of the stringer, leaving a 6 in first riser measured stringer-to-tread, which becomes 7 in again once the tread board is added.

Board size and stringer spacing
A 2x12 (actual width 11.25 in) is the standard stock for deck stringers because it leaves enough uncut material below the riser and tread notches to keep the stringer strong; smaller stock like 2x10 often doesn't leave enough meat on the board for a full-depth tread cut.
Spacing between stringers depends on the tread material: solid wood decking commonly allows 16 in on center, while composite decking often needs 12 in on center. Check your decking manufacturer's stair span chart, since spacing that's fine for a flat deck surface isn't automatically fine for stair treads.
Supporting the bottom of the stringer
The bottom of a deck stringer should never just rest on bare dirt, which shifts with moisture and frost. A concrete pad, a paver base on compacted gravel, or a pressure-treated sill plate bolted to a footing all give the stringer a stable bearing surface.
In freeze-thaw climates, some jurisdictions treat stair landing supports similarly to deck footings and expect them below the frost line; confirm locally since this varies a lot by region.
Seal or prime the cut ends of pressure-treated stringers where the drop cut and notches expose new wood; end grain absorbs moisture fastest and is where PT stringers rot first.
