Stair angle is the angle between the stringer (or the tread nosing line) and the horizontal floor. You get it with basic trigonometry: angle = arctan(rise / run), where rise and run can be per-step values or totals — the ratio is what matters.
For a 7.25 in riser and a 10.5 in tread, angle = arctan(7.25 / 10.5) = arctan(0.6905) ≈ 34.6°. Use per-step numbers or total rise/run; both give the same angle since the ratio doesn't change.
What angle feels comfortable
Most residential stairs fall somewhere around 30° to 37° from horizontal. Below 30° the stair starts eating a lot of floor space for how little height it gains. Above 37° it starts feeling steep and closer to a ladder, and headroom becomes harder to hit.
This isn't a hard code limit — it's a comfort range that follows naturally from commonly cited IRC reference values for riser and tread dimensions, since a 7¾ in max riser paired with a 10 in min tread already lands near 37.8°.

Setting a saw from the stair angle
For stringer layout with a framing square, you don't usually need degrees at all — you use the riser and tread numbers directly. But for cutting a skirt board, closed stringer, or a handrail return, you do need an actual saw angle.
For a miter cut on a skirt board that follows the stair's slope, set your saw to the stair angle itself. For the matching bevel or plumb cut at the top and bottom of a stringer, you're often working with the complement, 90° minus the stair angle.
- Calculate stair angle = arctan(rise / run).
- For a board running parallel to the slope (skirt board rip cut), set the saw's angle to the stair angle.
- For the plumb cut at the top of a stringer, set the saw to the stair angle from vertical, which equals 90° minus the stair angle from horizontal.
- For the level cut at the bottom (the seat cut), the reference line is horizontal, so it uses the stair angle measured from vertical as well, on the perpendicular face.
Cut a test piece from scrap first. A one-degree saw error compounds visibly over a full stringer length.
Handrail angle matches stair angle
A straight handrail that follows the pitch of the stair sits at the same angle as the stair itself, measured from horizontal. That's why rail bracket kits and stair angle brackets are often sold by degree range rather than one fixed number — a 34° stair and a 36° stair need slightly different bracket angles.
Common mistakes
Mixing up the angle from horizontal with the angle from vertical is the most frequent error — always state which one you mean, since they're complements of each other (they add to 90°).
Another is using average or nominal riser/tread numbers instead of the actual as-built dimensions, which can throw the angle off by a degree or more on an older or slightly irregular stair.
