Sometimes they want the total run — the horizontal distance the stairs eat up on the floor. Sometimes they want the stringer length, the actual board a carpenter has to buy and cut. Three different numbers called "stair length"

Total run is the horizontal distance from the first riser to the last, measured along the floor. It's what you check against available space in a room or hallway.

Stringer length (also called stringer run or the diagonal) is the actual length of lumber a stringer needs, measured along the slope from the bottom cut to the top cut. It's always longer than the total run because it accounts for rise as well.

Overall footprint adds anything else in the path — a landing, a turn, or clearance at top and bottom — to the total run. This is the number you need for a floor plan or permit drawing.

The formulas

Total run = number of treads × tread depth. If you have 8 treads at 10½ in each, run is 84 in, or 7 ft.

Stringer length = √(rise² + run²), the same Pythagorean formula you'd use for any right triangle. For a 90 in rise and 84 in run, that's √(90² + 84²) = √(8100 + 7056) = √15156 ≈ 123.1 in.

Footprint = total run + landing depth (typically 36 in minimum) + any extra clearance you're planning for at the bottom, such as a walkway offset.

Always measure total rise floor-to-floor first. Run and stringer length both depend on it, and a bad rise measurement throws off every other number.

How riser count changes the length

More risers means a shorter, gentler stair with a longer run, because you're spreading the same rise over more steps. Fewer risers means a steeper stair with a shorter run but often a code problem if the riser height gets too tall.

This is why you can't pick total length in isolation — it's locked to riser height and tread depth, which in turn are constrained by commonly cited IRC reference values (max 7¾ in riser, min 10 in tread for residential stairs) and by comfort rules like rise + run ≈ 17–18 in.

How to measure for a real project

Measure total rise with a level and tape from finished floor to finished floor, not from the subfloor — flooring thickness at top and bottom changes the number by half an inch or more.

If space is tight, work backward: measure the available run first, divide by your target tread depth to see how many treads fit, then check whether the resulting riser height still falls in a reasonable range.

  1. Measure total rise (finished floor to finished floor).
  2. Pick a target riser height, usually 7 to 7¾ in for residential stairs.
  3. Divide rise by target riser and round to the nearest whole number of risers.
  4. Recalculate actual riser height = rise ÷ risers, then treads = risers − 1.
  5. Multiply treads by tread depth to get total run, then find stringer length with the Pythagorean formula.

Common mistakes

Confusing stringer length with total run is the most common one — a lumber order based on total run alone will come up short, sometimes by a foot or more on a steep stair.

Forgetting nosing overhang is another. Nosing adds a bit to each tread's visual depth without changing the stringer layout, so it doesn't belong in the run or stringer formulas, but it does matter for headroom clearance.

Worked math

Worked example: 9 ft rise, standard risers

Given

  • Total rise: 108 in
  • Target riser: 7.25 in
  • Tread depth: 10.5 in

Steps

  1. Risers = round(108 / 7.25) = round(14.9) = 15
  2. Actual riser height = 108 / 15 = 7.2 in
  3. Treads = 15 − 1 = 14
  4. Total run = 14 × 10.5 = 147 in (12 ft 3 in)
  5. Stringer length = √(108² + 147²) = √(11664 + 21609) = √33273 ≈ 182.4 in

This stair needs 147 in of floor run and a stringer cut from a board at least 182 in (about 15 ft 2 in) long.

Stair Length Calculator FAQ

What is the difference between stair length and stair run?

Stair run is the horizontal footprint only. Stair length is ambiguous and can mean run, the stringer's diagonal length, or the full footprint including a landing — check which one your project needs before ordering material.

How do I calculate the length of a stringer?

Use stringer length = √(rise² + run²). Measure total rise and total run first, then apply the Pythagorean formula, or let the calculator do it from riser and tread inputs.

Does stair length include the landing?

Only if you're calculating overall footprint. Total run and stringer length are for the sloped section alone; add landing depth separately when you need floor space or a permit drawing.

Why is my stringer longer than the run?

Because the stringer travels diagonally, covering both rise and run, while the run measurement is horizontal only. The steeper the stair, the bigger the gap between the two numbers.

How much run do I need for 12 stairs?

With 12 risers you have 11 treads. At a common 10.5 in tread depth, that's 11 × 10.5 = 115.5 in, or about 9 ft 7½ in of run.

Does tread nosing change the total run calculation?

No. Nosing overhangs the riser below it but doesn't add to the stringer layout or total run; it only affects how the tread looks and how much headroom clearance you have.

What length of 2x12 do I need for stairs?

Buy at least a few inches longer than the calculated stringer length to allow for the bottom kick cut and top plumb cut. A 182 in stringer usually gets cut from a 16 ft board.
